TIPS : Do's and Don'ts of Beaches on Maui

Maui's beaches are the ultimate destination when traveling to Maui. They give us good times in the sun, and good memories, so let's make sure we take care of them in return. And Maui's South side is lined with some of Hawaii's best so you'll definitely want to escape for a day. Here are five things to do and five things not to do when visiting any of Hawaii's beaches.

Do...

1. Apply sunscreen
We all know that sunburns can be nasty. So just be safe and put sunscreen on to protect yourself from harmful rays. With Hawaii's location near the equator, sunrays are even stronger than you may be used to. Although midday can be the best time for the beach, the sun is strongest from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. If you do get burnt, apply aloe gel to soothe the skin. You won't be able to completely enjoy your vacation with a bad sunburn! Also, please be aware that some sunscreens are harmful to the coral reef. Sunscreens containing an ingredient called "oxybenzone" cause damage to the reef with high chances of killing the coral. So choose your sunscreen wisely and you're free to go!

2. Obey warnings and warning signs
A good tip is to go to a beach with lifeguards. It's important to listen to what the lifeguards have to say, even if it "looks" safe to you. Dangerous shore breaks and strong currents are common in Hawaii and signs are always being put out here and there. It may be safe to go in but you should always be aware of your surroundings.

3.  Swim with a companion
Safety always comes first and you'll never know when you'll be in need of assistance. The waters can be dangerous and a swimming companion or group is always a smart idea. You may be a pro at swimming but you'll never know when the currents or tides could turn on you. Stay safe!

4. Bring water and snacks
Hydration is important! With the long hours in the sun, you will definitely need a bottle of water to be sure that your body stays hydrated. Also, all of the fun at the beach may leave you hungry, so pack some snacks for yourself and for others to make the most of your beach experience.

5. RELAX!
You're on vacation! Kick back and relax next to the ocean. All beaches are public and free, so it's important to make the most of your visit. There's so much to do, from getting a golden tan to snorkeling with friends, to enjoying a barbecue at sunset. A trip to the beach is always one to remember.

Don't...

1. Litter
These are some of the world's most beautiful beaches. You don't want to ruin that by leaving your trash behind. We want you to have a good time, but you also need to be respectful of the island's beaches and those who plan on visiting after you. Trash in the water can be very harmful to the sea life, so keep the shore and the waters clean to make sure Hawaii continues to be the paradise everyone loves.

2. Approach or touch Hawaiian Monk Seals or Honu (Green Sea Turtle)
These creatures are native to Hawaii, making them special to the Hawaiians. Also note that they are endangered, so harming or even disturbing these sea animals is considered a crime. Hawaii's law declares that those who harm the Hawaiian monk seal or honu will face time in prison and have to pay hefty fines. Also, Hawaiians view the honu as a sacred animal, so please be respectful of the culture. Conservation efforts have been very beneficial to the honu but monk seal numbers are still declining.

3. Turn your back to the ocean
Never underestimate the power of Mother Nature. Always stay alert and aware of the currents and the waves. We want you to have fun and be worry free, but safety always comes first.

4. Damage the coral reef
The coral reef is home to many beautiful sea creatures. It would be a shame to see their homes destroyed. Be sure to avoid touching or stepping on the reef because even the smallest actions can cause damage. Admire the reef from above when snorkeling or taking a swim!

5. Take sand or rocks from the beach
It may be tempting, but do not take home any rocks or sand from the beach. It is illegal to remove anything from any public park. Enjoy, but respect the land!

These tips are good to keep in mind while you enjoy you're day at the beach. Stay safe and remember to just have a good time in paradise!
