Winter on Maui
Waterfalls, Waves & Whales
Hawaii only has two seasons, summer and winter. Summer spans from May to October and winter from November to April. Like many different places in the world, Maui has certain features which are seasonal. We are going to be highlighting some of Maui's wonderful winter features. Waterfalls, waves, and whales are all considered to be best during winter!
Road to Hana
With an increase in rain during the winter months, Maui's road to Hana sees even more lush rainforest-like conditions. There are waterfalls to be found around every bend and they are flowing! You will find waterfalls on short hikes, long hikes, and even see them from the road. The Pools of 'Ohe'o or Seven Sacred Pools are a remote attraction just past Hana town within Haleakala National Park and they are a must-see! A spectacular hike in this area is the Pipiwai trail which culminates in yet another waterfall, Waimoku Falls. Enjoy the land of waterfalls on a trip to Hana!
Winter on Maui is monster wave season on the North Shore. Ho'okipa Beach Park, just past relaxed Paia Town, holds a great wave in the winter. It is known for world-class surfing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding. It even has an excellent lookout on the top of the beach park which provides an excellent vantage point for viewing the waves! One of the most famous big wave breaks in the world is found on Maui and called Pe'ahi or Jaws. The waves at Jaws can exceed sixty feet in the winter months and attract intrepid big wave surfers and curious visitors.
Whale Season on Maui is December to May. During these months, Humpback Whales meander through Hawaii's waters. These graceful humpback whales can often be spotted from shores spouting and slapping away playfully. However, a whale watch tour is an incredible opportunity to get closer to these gentle giants and learn more about them.
