Summer is just around the corner and we hope you are getting ready to plan your Hawaiian vacation! With your Hawaii oceanfront vacation rental booked, your Maui activities all planned out the only thing left to do is see what you and your family are going to do when you get here. Well if you’re looking for a great event to attend then we recommend checking out the 28th Annual Ki Ho’alu Slack Key Guitar Festival this coming June!

On Sunday, June 23rd from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. the 28th Annual Ki Ho’alu will be a slack key guitar festival at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Ki Ho’alu translates to “loosen the key” in Hawaiian and celebrates this particular style of music that dates back to the 19th-century paniolo era. During that time, slack key was played around the campfire after a day of manual labor and began a tradition on the island that is still practiced today. Nowadays, it has become known as one of the world’s greatest acoustic guitar techniques and the Grammy Awards has even recognized Hawaiian slack key music in its own category.

This annual summer festival has been bringing together some of the top Hawaiian slack key guitar performers in Hawaii year after year and continues to be a popular event for music lovers all over. Located at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Maui, you can enjoy the sweet sounds of the guitar from the beauty and comfort of an open lawn area. Festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, or lauhala mats to sit back and relax and enjoy the show.

All generations and ages are welcome, and guests should know that crafts and merchants will be on site with plenty of local goods for purchase as well as food trucks where you can find some tasty grinds. And the best part is the show is free! So unlike other music festivals, you won’t have to spend a lot of money (or any for that matter) to attend. Check it out this summer, and we’ll see you on the lawn!

ps. If you want to bring the extended family over for this amazing musical concert event, remember, we offer 3 bedroom condos in South Maui that can accommodate up to 8 guests!
