Whale Festival at Kalama Park
World Whale Day is coming up! For over 30 years, the Pacific Whale Foundation has held the Whale Festival in South Kihei to commemorate and inform residents and visitors about Maui’s winter guests.
February is peak whale season in Maui. Hawaii’s Kohola (whales) migrate from Alaska every winter crossing a distance of about 6,000 miles, easily the longest annual migration of any mammal! North Pacific Humpbacks are the dominant whale found in Hawaiian waters.
The island is ready to celebrate its Humpback Whales on February 18th with a parade of whales from 9 to 10 a.m. on South Kihei Road. This is followed by an all day celebration to raise awareness at Kalama Park, a spacious 36-acre beach park.
Events here will include live music from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., a whale regatta, a Keiki (children) Carnival, local foods and a “Made on Maui” artisans fair.
Whether you are living on the islands or visiting, the Whale Festival is a big Maui gathering you won’t want to miss. Over 20,000 Maui residents gather at Kalama Park in Kihei to celebrate the whales that mate just off the West Coast of the island.
The entrance fee is free for keiki 12 and under. Otherwise, entry is $5 cash. Pre-sale tickets are available at the Pacific Whale Foundation Store in Maalaea and Lahaina.
Not on Maui on February 18th? Not a problem! Kohola visit the island from December until March, making the entire winter season ideal for whale watching. Not to mention, Maui’s tropical winters are typically in the 80s.
Rentals Maui has the perfect accommodation for visitors to the island. All vacation rentals are conveniently located within minutes of Kalama Park, either in Kihei, Wailea or Maalaea. Check out the rental property map to find a location that best suites your needs. See you at the Whale Festival!
