With the diverse and amazing beauty our island paradise offers, is it any surprise that hiking in Maui is at the top of many travelers list?
When it comes to the great outdoors in Hawaii, nothing says adventure quite like a hike. And while hiking in Maui is a wonderful and exciting experience, it’s vital that you, friends, and family remain safe while experiencing our island paradise up close and personal. That’s why we want you to be prepared and read through some of these safety tips that will help you during your Maui hike.
Take Food and Water
This is a MUST! You can never have enough water, and that goes double for when you are on Maui. Remember, we are in the tropics so it can get pretty hot on the island. Having enough water to help you make it through your hike is essential. It’s also a good idea to bring snacks in case anyone gets hungry or you simply want to refuel with some nourishing energy.
Watch the Weather
The weather tends to change a lot on the island, so it’s imperative you keep an eye on what’s going on and avoid hiking if it’s raining or even cloudy for that matter. If you see dark clouds on the mountain, stay away from running water as the island is prone to flash flooding.
If you’re heading out on a hike, make sure you wear brightly colored clothes so in the unfortunate event you get lost rescue crews can find you. You might also want to wear long sleeves to avoid sunburn.
Charge Your Cell Phones
This is key! You’ll want your cell phone in case you need help navigating the trails or need to call someone for help. Better yet? Bring along a portable charger! They are fairly cheap and small in size.
Extras Come in Handy
Pack sunscreen, mosquito repellent and an umbrella, poncho or jacket. If the weather changes or you run into mosquitos, you’ll be so happy you came prepared.
