Discover Our Island History During Your Next Maui Vacation

By Kathy Englert

Our island paradise has a wonderful history steeped in ancient tradition and mythology. There are many history books which detail the exquisite cultural landscape of ancient Hawaii and it’s inhabitants, but there is no substitute for experiencing the original places and items of old Hawaii. One of the best places to begin your historical cultural journey of Maui is at the Bailey House Museum in Old Wailuku Town.

Tucked away beside the road to Iao Valley, the Bailey House Museum sits within the compound of the final ruling chief of Maui, itself registered as a valued historic location in the National Register of Historic Places. The museum traces its roots back to 1833, when it was built as a home for Missionaries who had voyaged to Maui from lands far away. Having changed hands a few times since being erected, the Maui Historical Society now owns and operates the Bailey House Museum. Dedicated to the collection, preservation, and study of Maui’s many historical sites and artifacts, the Maui Historical Society aims to share our islands rich history with all whom are interested. With that aim, the Bailey House Museum maintains a collection of many items from Maui’s intricate past, from photos to fishing relics, to culturally significant native Hawaiian plants and even a 33 foot long koa fishing canoe built in 1900.

Staffed by exuberant experts and volunteers committed to cultivating knowledge of Maui’s rich island history, the Bailey House Museum is open daily from 10am to 4pm, and should be the first stop for anyone looking to learn more about the rich island history and culture of our beautiful Maui home.
