Eating is an important part of traveling. In fact, it’s one of the things that people look forward to on their holiday. So if you’re going to Maui for a holiday, you’re probably wondering where you should go when eating out. Although you will probably choose to cook your own meals when staying in a fully-equipped vacation rental in Maui, it won’t hurt to treat yourself and indulge a bit during your Maui vacation.

If you’re staying in the South Maui area, you’ll have plenty of dining options to choose from. This area includes the towns of Maalaea, Wailea, Makena, and Kihei. Those staying in a rental property in Kihei should check out the Nalu’s South Shore Grill, a popular restaurant in Kihei known for serving healthy and delectable dishes. Located within Azeka Shopping Center, Nalu’s South Shore Grill is a fun and offbeat dining spot in South Maui. It’s also within easy walking distance from our Waiohuli Beach Hale and Kihei Garden Estates rentals.

Welcoming Atmosphere

Although the food often takes the spotlight in a restaurant, the atmosphere is what sets the stage. Nalu’s South Shore Grill offers a welcoming ambiance, which offers a more pleasant dining experience. The ceiling is decorated with an old wooden koa canoe, which was salvaged from a gas station convenience store in Hilo. Colorful photographs can be seen hanging all over the restaurant walls and a live band can be heard playing in one corner.

With its casual open-air setting, Nalu’s South Shore Grill is the perfect dining spot for groups of friends or families with kids, or anyone staying in the South or North Kihei area. Nalu’s is an open-air restaurant, with four tables outdoors, eight indoor tables, and some seats at the bar.

The restaurant is often filled with locals and tourists sharing wonderful stories while tucking into a giant serving of delicious and healthy meals. But don’t expect waiters to come to your table to take your order as you enter. You have to approach the counter to place your order. A few minutes later, the server will come bringing the food to your table.

Healthy and Delectable Foods

Nalu’s South Shore Grill serves breakfast, lunch, or dinner. For breakfast, you can choose from pancakes, eggs, cereals, and breakfast bowls. These breakfast staples are available to order through lunchtime. If you can’t decide what to order for breakfast, try the Fried Chicken and Waffle. This popular breakfast meal consists of organic farm-raised chicken, bacon, and Belgian-style waffle topped with a brown butter sage and organic maple syrup.

Their famous Loco Moco is available to order all through the day. This delectable meal is available in two varieties. The Classic version consists of a ground beef patty served on top of blended brown rice and smothered with delicious gravy. It also comes with two eggs cooked in any way you wish, then garnished with Molokai black lava salt, with Nalu’s mac salad on the side. Non-meat eaters can opt for the healthier variety, the Nalu’s Loco Moco. Instead of ground beef patty, this version is made with homemade tofu, spinach, and quinoa served on top of blended brown rice and topped with gravy. Of course, it also comes with eggs and a mac salad.

For lunch, the menu consists of salads, crab cakes, burgers, salad wraps, sandwiches, and poke bowls. Nalu’s is also famous for its nightly dinner special, which is the restaurant’s “plate of the day”. Everything on Nalu’s menu is made from scratch using fresh and organic ingredients that are locally sourced. Even the grass-fed beef that they use for their sumptuous patties came from the Makaweli Ranch in Kauai.

What’s great about Nalu’s South Shore Grill is that they also cater to vegetarians. Aside from the satisfying Nalu’s Loco Moco, they have several other vegetarian meals, such as the Nalu’s Raw Salad and the Three Egg Omelet Caprese. They taste so good that even meat-eaters won’t be able to resist. The other standout dishes on their menu are the smoky apple brie burger and the fall-off-the-bone ribs.

The average cost of entrée in Nalu’s is $15, so it’s certainly the best-value meal on the south of Maui. Aside from the delectable meals, Nalu’s South Shore Grill also serves a wide variety of delicious cocktail drinks from their bar.

Great Location

Nalu’s South Shore Grill is strategically located in the center of Kihei. Azeka Shopping Center, the shopping center where the restaurant is located, is the smaller of the two Azeka shopping centers. It is located on the side road near the ocean. Most of the resort condominiums in South Maui have a free shuttle that takes guests to Kihei. They can request to be dropped off in Azeka Shopping Center. Nalu’s is open seven days a week, from 8 AM to 9 PM. Their daily Happy Hour takes place from 3 PM to 6 PM. During Happy Hours,  guests can take advantage of discounted beverages, including beers, margaritas, and Mai Tais. And if you come here at around 7 to 7:30 PM, you will be treated to live band music.

Aside from Nalu’s South Shore Grill, the Azeka Shopping Center is also home to several other great restaurants in South Maui, such as the Coconut’s Fish Cafe, Ekolu Kitchen 1279, Fork and Salad, Izakaya Genbe, Miso Phat Sushi, Maui Pie, and more. There’s also a hardware store in the Azeka Shopping Center, as well as a flower shop, tattoo shops, art galleries, and quilt shop.

Nalu’s South Shore Grill is a wonderful dining spot in South Maui that serves delicious and healthy meals. If you are going to Maui and you plan on staying at any of the vacation condos in South Maui, you should take time to visit this restaurant. Whether you come here for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you will be treated to delicious and healthy meals. Since they also cater to vegetarians, then this is the best spot to visit for health-conscious vegetarian tourists. But the best part about eating at Nalu’s South Shore Grill is that everything on the menu is reasonably priced!
